Martand Sun Temple was built by Raja Ranadatiya in the 8th century and is situated 8km away fronm Anantnag district in south kashmir should be a marvellous testament to the architectural achievements of Kashmir's ancient Karkota Dynasty. Instead it lies forgotten and in shambles 8km from Anantnag in south Kashmir. The king built Martandeshwari temple dedicated to Surya Bhagwan around 370 t0 400 C.E in front of his palace and was completed by Lalitadatiya Muktapida. In the 15 century it was destroyed by Muslim ruler Sikandar Butshikan , and it has stood in ruins ever since.
